Addiction Medicine
Addiction is defined as a chronic, relapsing brain disease that is characterized by compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences. It is considered a brain disease because opioids cause changes the brain. These brain changes can be long lasting and can lead to many harmful, often self-destructive, behaviors.
Many long-term medical conditions—diabetes, high blood pressure, asthma, and opioid dependence—are treated with both medication and behavioral changes. Since these conditions are ongoing, the treatments are, too. Medication-assisted treatment is meant to help keep opioid dependence symptoms under control so one can focus on the treatment plan needed for full recovery and the ability to live a self-directed life.
